GAS to Power & Alternative Energy Sources Conference 2019

21st to 22nd Nov 2019, Durban , RSA

Conference Overview

Natural gas represents a very important and growing part of the global energy system. It is the fastest growing fossil fuel and its consumption is forecast to increase by 1.4 per cent annually. Global gas consumption is projected to increase from 124 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) in 2015 to 177 Tcf in 2040. This contributes the largest increase in world primary energy consumption. Natural gas is finding its place at the heart of energy discussion worldwide. Recent discoveries of new supplies of gas, the remarkable speed and scale of shale gas development globally and decreasing gas prices have heightened the awareness of natural gas as a key component of energy supply mix in a carbon constrained world economy.
Transnet SOC Ltd recently announced a cost-sharing agreement with IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, to conclude a feasibility study for the development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and Regasification Terminal at the Port of Richards Bay and the re-purposing of Transnet pipelines for natural gas transmission to inland markets. There are abundant supplies of natural gas in the world and, recently, particularly in Mozambique. Many of these supplies can be developed and produced at relatively low cost. The role of natural gas is expected to continue to expand, and its relative importance within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is likely to increase further as greenhouse gas emissions are contained.
This 2-day conference will look into the possibility of using LNG and other energy sources to reduce the burden on coal as the main source of energy in South Africa.
